PERL
was one of the first languages, I first worked with it at Winternet
Internet Services. Where I learned a lot of it. It is easy to
recognize and often takes a ton of code to do the simplest things.
But if you do not have PHP support on the server you may consider
it. GURU's do use it a lot, I do not (too messy and easy
to get lost in).

Javascript
is another specifically made for the web based off of much of
the JAVA ideals. But Java is a independant actual programming
language made by SunMicrosystems. Javascript was advanced by Netscape
mostly. It has its flaws and yet it is still used. more
PHP
was first used to create a better home page and to improve on
Javascript and replace PERL for the web. It has been introduced
to the Open Source movement and have become quite complex and
powerful. more
Even more
powerful when working with a Database, such as MySQL.

JAVA
was done my Sunmicrosystems to be a open programming language
to work on any platform. The idea is write once and run everywhere.
Microsft took it into their operating system but altered the original
code as it operated, this caused SUN to take it to the courts.
They were altering it without letting them know and in ways it
did not work right. That is why you now have to download a separate
component to make it work. MS decided to remove it from all machines.
This inspired the opensource movement that now threatens Microsoft,
but JAVA to my knowledge is not opensource. Neat program language.
(kinda what inspoired the words JOVIAN in my name here.) more
ASP,
Microsofts attempt to do as PHP does, not as powerful or secure.
Also loads a bit slower. Some accuse Microsoft of stealing code,
none to my knowlege have panned out as 100 percent proven. more
Action
Script was developed by Macromedia, a competitor to Adobe
until they merged. Macromedia was more friendly to the web since
day one, vs Adobe that is. It is much like Javascript and is associated
with Flash animation. It is more secure then Active X by Microsoft.
But both can introduce security issues. more
Active
X, a scripting language that pulls from elements within Windows
Operating system. That alone makes it not very safe or secure
for the end user. Many Adware and spyware comes from these security
issues. Action Scripting can also have similar issues. I refuse
much work in it, but often there is only this as a tool, I will
look for alternatives before using this. more
CSS
or Cascading Style Sheet is another scripting language
that is used often to Tweek a look of a site beyond HTML, which
seems stuck in version 4.0 for over a half a decade. more
HTML,
or Hyper Text Markup Language, is the most common and easily
written language. Web Designers often get confused when confronted
by it and do no realize their tools they use is actually translating
their graphics into this language. I find this amusing. It is
a given your work on the web will be in this language ultimately.

XML
I know honestly little on this. Never had a need. But due to a
few jobs asking for skills on this, which I know not exactly why
I currently am studying. On a 1-10 I do consider myself a 3 already.
RSS feeds do use it, that I know. more
Update
on XML: This seems to be a exercise in chaos. Seems to try
and replace anchor tags, best I see so far, only more chaoticly...
Still looking for a actual use to this silliness. It has a Buzword
among companies, just not web designers....
There are
others, but you will find these to be most common.
